Darland Late 1940s
False Memories; Toile Fausse
79 x 79 cm 2014
This design was developed from family photographs of the 1940s. At that time there was an army camp between the Darland Banks and its woods and Twydall on the other side of Watling Street. The woods were full of unexploded ordinance. At this remove it is impossible to know what I actually remember and what are false memories prompted by the snaps. My choice of a “toile” layout and colourway was influenced by the fabric and wallpaper designs of Timorous Beasties and the many Archie Brennan tapestries produced at the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh that contain punning references to other forms of fabric. Also a 1979 cartoon strip by Posie Simmonds, incorporating a Toile de Jouy blind fabric.
