A sub-title to this tapestry might be “An anti-nail bar piece, being a homage to tactile work.” Made with my own elderly hands, it show others’ much-used hands, either at work - potting, spinning, basket weaving, measuring, bread-making, hammering, teasing out wool, planting out - or just displaying their end-of-productive-life battered state.
Two of the four large hands in the corners of the tapestry belong to Mary Butcher, artist/basket maker. After decades of working with willow and other strong materials, Mary’s hands are different sizes and quite unalike. Something to celebrate, in my opinion.
